Pop culture has always embraced a beautiful smile. Actors, actresses, and hollywood types pioneer in the way we think and feel about our smiles. This past couple of months Kanye West has taken smiling it to a whole new level. Kanye went on the Ellen Show and showed off his new “grill”. Later when asked by vanity fair, why he had diamonds permanently drilled into his bottom teeth. His answer, “I just like diamond teeth and I didn’t feel like having to take them out all the time.”
As a cosmetically driven dentist, I am always in search of the latest and greatest material to make more lifelike smiles. If you ask me based on what I know about Kanye’s new teeth, I would be very afraid of the long term stability of his bite. If in fact these are diamond crowns, my prediction is he will soon be chipping and breaking his top teeth. It seems to be a heavy price to pay in the long run, and I wish Kanye well on his Journey to path-find a new vision for dentistry.
